Project 1...so far

Project 1 Photo

I was very intrigued by the three artists we looked over in class: Gregory Crewdon, Teun Hocks, Jeff Wall, and Cindy Sherman.

I really enjoyed Gregory Crewsdon's work, because of the theatrical feel it had to it. Most of his scenes art set up to seem like a very intimate moment that most of the viewers feel they are interrupting. I liked how he evoked different emotions with the effects of lighting, especially by putting a blue cast over certain photos to get the emotion of a certain sense of sadness or loneliness across to the viewer. 

Teun Hock's photos were probably some of my favorite, because of the humor he evokes in his pictures. I was surprised at the fact that he keeps all of his photographs untitled. I also found it very amusing that he was the subject in all of his pictures and that he wore a suit in every one of his works too. What I found especially interesting and beautiful was the way he took his photographs, but also the fact that he painted over them which I never seen before but have now become very fond of. 

I liked the realistic quality of Jeff Walls photography, and how his subjects didn't really seem as if they were set up to be photographed, but at the same time I wasn't as intrigued by his work as I was with the other artists. 

I enjoyed Cindy Sherman's work, and I have to give her credit for putting herself in her work, because I know that I would hate to have to use myself in my photos! I liked the simple black and white quality to her work. Most of her work reminded me of pin up girls from the 1950s.

Inspiration

I have always been influenced by Andy Warhol's artwork, because I'm partial to having bold colors in artwork rather than black and white.

Last year I had my first experience with screen printing and most of my inspiration for my design came from Warhol's banana design. 

Although I'm a big fan of color I'm also a big fan of black and white photography after dabbling with it last year, and I was disappointed that I was only able to do it last year for a couple of months. I hope to produce more black and white photos in the future.
